Red Yucca

Red Yucca

Red yucca send out arched limbs of pink blossoms all summer long in the desert. They're in medians, in yards, in parking lots. We scarcely notice them until we look. So look!

This painting won Best of Show at the 16th Annual Artistic Celebration of Our Mountains exhibit. Now it's in a private collection.

Red Yucca 2

Red Yucca 2

I was fascinated by the rhythmic crossover of red yucca blooms I see everywhere. I decided to reduce them to a dreamy black and white so maybe next time you'd notice how they curve back and forth before your eyes.

Century

Century

One day there's just an agave. The next day it has shot up a 20-food stalk that bursts open with tiers of flowers. Literally from one day to the next this miracle unfurls. Part of the desert's magic.

Paloverde/Moroccan Sky

Paloverde/Moroccan Sky

Acrylic on canvas

Paloverde trees are everywhere in my home town. We drive past dozens a day. Really look next time. Those muscular, bright green branches fringed in long leaves that play in the wind. It's a beautiful thing, even if you just notice the edges.

Santa Rita

Santa Rita

The Santa Rita is a purple-tinged prickly pear. They're striking. We're so used to seeing green or gray/green/blue. When you catch sight of one, it can stop you in your tracks. I liked thinking about comets racing down to meet one.

Night Above the Franklins

Night Above the Franklins

I am not convinced there isn't a dragon whipping a massive tail through the skies when the wind really gets going up above the Franklin Mountains. The tips of the peaks are placid and quiet in the moonlight, but that dragon never is.
